How to Choose a Hunting Gear OEM Partner: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Commit

Bringing a new hunting product to market is exciting — but finding the right manufacturing partner can make or break your launch. Whether you’re a startup with a napkin sketch or an established brand expanding your line, the OEM partner you choose will determine your product quality, cost, and time to market.

After 17 years in the hunting gear industry — first managing production for treestand lines, then sourcing components for major North American brands — we’ve seen what separates great manufacturing partners from the rest. Here are the five questions you should ask before signing any agreement.

1. Do They Have In-House Design Capability?

Many factories can produce a part from a finished drawing, but what if you only have a rough concept? A partner with industrial design capability can refine your idea, suggest material improvements, and create production-ready 3D models. This saves you from hiring a separate design firm and ensures your concept is optimized for manufacturing from day one.

What to look for: Ask to see examples of products they’ve designed, not just manufactured. A team that can show you sketch-to-product transformations is worth its weight in gold.

2. Who Owns the Molds — and Who Pays for Them?

Tooling is one of the biggest upfront costs in custom manufacturing. Some factories require you to fully fund the molds but keep ownership, effectively locking you into their production line. Others offer shared investment models where both parties contribute, giving you more flexibility and lower risk.

What to look for: A partner willing to co-invest in molds signals long-term commitment. And always clarify mold ownership and storage terms before the first payment.

3. How Do They Handle Quality Control?

“We do QC” isn’t enough. You need to know how they do it. Do they have dedicated QC personnel on-site during your production? Do they inspect incoming raw materials, not just finished goods? A partner that treats quality as a process — from material sourcing through final packaging — is far more reliable than one that only checks products at the end of the line.

What to look for: Look for partners who embed quality engineers directly into the production process. Ask if they can provide inspection reports and photos during production.

4. What Happens When Something Goes Wrong?

Production issues happen — a batch of material fails testing, a shipment gets delayed, a tolerance is off. How your partner handles these moments defines the relationship. Do they proactively communicate and offer solutions, or do they wait for you to discover the problem?

What to look for: Ask for a real example of a production problem they resolved. Their answer will tell you more about their reliability than any polished sales pitch.

5. Can They Protect Your Intellectual Property?

Your product idea is valuable. Before you share details, your manufacturing partner should be ready to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement). Beyond the legal formality, ask about their track record: Have they handled confidential designs before? Do they have internal processes to keep client projects separate?

What to look for: A partner who brings up confidentiality before you do is one who respects your IP.

Why This Matters for Your Product

Choosing a manufacturing partner isn’t just about price per unit. It’s about finding a team that can guide your product from concept to delivery, handle problems before they become crises, and protect your intellectual property along the way.
